Your field card
Color and contrast • 20 minutes
- Find one small patch of color against a quieter background.
- Frame two colors that meet at an edge.
- Make two frames of one subject: closer and farther away.
- Look for the same color in two different materials.
- Choose a final frame that feels different from your first.
Stay on a safe, permitted route. Stop moving before composing.
Keep the Sun outside your view and never look at it through a lens or binoculars. Ask permission before photographing people; avoid sharing private locations.
After the outing
Which frame best shows your theme? What would you change on a second visit?
Try a two-person photo walk
Start with the same theme and make your own frames. Compare one choice each: where you stood, what you excluded and why. Compare decisions, not who has the better camera. For a group exhibit, use images without identifying people or private locations.
Keep prediction separate from observation
A forecast can help you plan, but the field card records what you actually notice. Buildings, trees and hills can block a view. If you return at a different time, note the change before comparing images.
For repeated observation, use our free Same Spot, Seven Skies activity. It includes seven prompts and a copyable observation card.

Want to plan the light, too?
We publish Asterfold: Sunset Planner. Its free tier includes Studio, planning for two viewpoints and journal check-ins. Optional paid Plus adds features. Requires iOS or iPadOS 18 or later.
Use it to plan and record a visit, then compare the plan with the view you actually find. Forecasts and estimates do not guarantee a colorful sky or an unobstructed horizon.

Do I need a camera or a sunset?
No. Use a phone or sketchbook, and choose a safe time and setting. Ordinary light and an indoor window view work.
Can a club or educator print this?
Yes. Copy and print this original field card with credit to Honest Little Apps. Select the theme and time before using Print field card.
What happens to my selections?
This builder does not save them or send them as form submissions. Reloading returns the defaults. Copying puts the card text on your clipboard only when you press Copy.
